It’s a new week and that means a new Canadian Hockey League (CHL) top 10 rankings and other news from the WHL.
The QMJHL is back with half of the top 10 as they were just a couple of weeks ago. But there’s a new number one as the Moncton Wildcats dropped to the two spot. The Drummondville Voltigeurs checked in at three, this year’s Memorial Cup host Rimouski Oceanic at five, Chicoutimi Saguenéens at eight and the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies at nine.
The OHL checked in with three including the new number one team in the CHL, the London Knights. The Kitchener Rangers checked in at seven and the defending Memorial Cup champion Windsor Spitfires at 10.
In the WHL, the Everett Silvertips slid in at four and the Prince George Cougars at six.
London jumped to the top spot as they’re riding an 11-game winning streak, which is currently the longest in the CHL. The Silvertips, Oceanic and Rangers have all went undefeated in the past week. Drummondville also has 16 wins on the season.
The Wenatchee Wild announced on Tuesday the signing 2005-born defenseman Lukas McCloskey, who spent time with the club during its British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) days. He’s in his third junior hockey season and was most recently with the BCHL’s Vernon Vipers.
He played 118 games in the BCHL for Wenatchee and Vernon. During that time, he netted six goals and dished out 21 assists for 27 points between the two teams. He was named one of the league’s Top Prospects during the 2022-23 season. In his first stint with the Wild, he notched 10 points in 46 games. He is now one of two players to be part of the Wild in both the BCHL and WHL.
But he’s a unique addition as the new agreement between the CHL and NCAA made this truly possible. He has an active NCAA Division I commitment to play for the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York following his junior career.
He joined the team this past week and made his first WHL appearance with the Wild on Saturday, before grabbing his first WHL goal and assist on Sunday against the Kamloops Blazers.
Wenatchee also announced a trade last Thursday with the Regina Pats. The Wild acquired the rights to 2006-born defenseman Brendan Dunphy from Regina in exchange for a sixth-round selection in the 2027 WHL Prospects Draft. Dunphy is another college list player, who is currently committed to UCONN after his junior career. He’s currently in his second junior hockey season. Dunphy has played 68 games for the BCHL’s Langley Rivermen and posted 12 points with two goals and 10 assists during that time.
He began his junior career after time with the Anaheim Jr. Ducks AAA program. During his time with the Ducks’ program, he helped lead the club’s 16-and-under team to the 2023 USA Hockey national tournament.
The Prince Albert Raiders made headlines with the WHL’s Player of the Week. Forward Tomas Mrsic had five goals and two assists for seven points in two games, good for a +4 rating.
