It’s a new week in major junior hockey and with that comes a new Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Top 10 rankings and other news.
The Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with four teams each this week.
In the QMJHL, the Moncton Wildcats checked in at two, Drummondville Voltigeurs at four, Rimouski Océanic at five and the Chicoutimi Saguenéens rounding it out at the 10 spot.
The OHL saw the London Knights lead the CHL at the top spot. The Kitchener Rangers checked in at six, Windsor Spitfires at seven and Barrie Colts at nine.
That left the Western Hockey League (WHL) with two teams. The Everett Silvertips checked in at the three spot and the Spokane Chiefs at the eight spot.
In other CHL news, a total of 24 players from the three major junior leagues have been selected to represent Team Canada at the 2025 World Junior Championship tournament.
Of those 24 players, 14 are from the OHL, eight from the WHL and two from the QMJHL.
The Spokane Chiefs saw Berkly Catton and Asanali Sarkenov named to their respective national teams for the world junior tournament. Catton will represent Canada while Sarkenov will represent Kazakhstan.
So far this season, Sarkenvon has 15 points on six goals and nine assists, including two-goal nights on Dec. 13 against the Seattle Thunderbirds and Nov. 30 against the Portland Winterhawks. The six-foot-four winger is within the top ten Chiefs scorers and their second-highest scoring rookie behind Mathis Preston. He's also ranked within the top 15 rookies in the Western Hockey League.
As for Catton, the 5-foot-10 forward has tallied 47 points with 14 goals and 33 assists in 28 games this season. His 47 points rank third in the WHL, while his 33 assists rank second, trailing only Medicine Hat’s Gavin McKenna.
McKenna, who turns 17 on Dec. 20, leads all Canadian Major Junior players in scoring, with 60 points as he’s tallied 19 goals and 41 assists in 30 games this season.
In other WHL news from the Edmonton Oil Kings, Florida Panthers prospect Gracyn Sawchyn was named the league’s player of the week. He led all WHL skaters with four goals and four assists for eight points and a +7 rating in just two games.
On Tuesday night in the WHL, the Portland Winterhawks rallied to power their way past the Spokane Chiefs 6-4. Winterhawks captain Kyle Chyzowski recorded his 100th career assist on Weiermair’s goal that put Portland up 5-4.
In the OHL on Tuesday a blockbuster trade was announced in the OHL between the London Knights and Guelph Storm. London acquired Washington Capitals prospect Cam Allen who led the Storm in points prior to the trade. He was selected by the Capitals in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft in the fifth round, 136th overall. This season the 19-year-old defenseman has tallied seven goals and 18 assists for 25 points in 27 games.
Heading to Guelph was Noah Jenken along with seven future draft selections.
