It’s that time again as players of the week are honored, CHL top 10 rankings come out and more.
This week’s CHL top 10 rankings saw the London Knights continue to hold the top spot. Fellow OHL members the Kitchener Rangers checked in at seven, the Windsor Spitfires at nine and the Brantford Bulldogs at 10.
In the QMJHL, the Moncton Wildcats slid in at two and the Rimouski Océanic at three.
The WHL saw the Spokane Chiefs slide in at four, Everett Silvertips at five, Medicine Hat Tigers at six and the Calgary Hitmen at eight.
With his outstanding performances in the past week, Gavin McKenna of the Eastern Conference leading Medicine Hat Tigers has been awarded the WHL Player of the Week honor. It’s the second time he’s received the weekly honor this season. His dominating performance in the past week included three goals and six assists for nine points in four games.
So far this season McKenna has tallied 32 goals and 74 assists for 106 points in 51 games played. He’s the top NHL prospect for the 2026 Entry Draft. In the past week he extended his point streak to 35 games.
Staying in the WHL’s Eastern Conference, the Calgary Hitmen’s Daniel Houser received WHL Goaltender of the Week honors. He recorded a 3-0-0-0 record, .67 goals against average and a .969 save percentage including back-to-back shutouts.
The WHL’s Rookie of the Week also came from the Eastern Conference as Daxon Rudolph of the Prince Albert Raiders received the honor. The 16-year-old defenseman led all rookies with a goal and five assists for six points and a +9 rating in four games.
As far as the realignment of the WHL and possibly the CHL as a whole goes with all of the recent changes, there as another update this week.
TSN hockey insider Darren Dreger reported on his X feed that the NHL and CHL met this week. It was said there was a lot of discussion on the potential of a new approach to junior hockey in North America. The NHL could direct and help guide future expansion and growth of a bigger league. He said they’re very preliminary talks with much more discussion ahead.
Before the reports of the Penticton Vees joining the WHL next season and a return to Chilliwack the following season, there were reports of a Junior-A super league per say with the best BCHL franchises and whatever else it might have included. With Penticton joining the WHL next season and likely a Chilliwack franchise the following season, it begs the question of what this expansion could be that the CHL and NHL are possibly planning.
There is another BCHL team in a former WHL market in addition to Chilliwack. That franchise is the Cranbrook Bucks who play at the 4,654 Western Financial Place. The venue previously hosted the Kootenay Ice, who later became the Winnipeg ICE and have since relocated again to Wenatchee, Washington where they rebranded as the Wenatchee Wild. There are no reports of the WHL being interested in returning to Cranbrook. However, with everything going on, it makes one wonder if the facility could get some upgrades and house the WHL once again one day.
